In the year 2000, the U. Mint released its first ever bi-metallic gold and platinum coin.

The coin was issued as a tribute to the 200th anniversary of the Library of Congress. Established in 1800, the Library is notably the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States, and is recognized as the largest library in the world. Library of Congress Commemorative coin was minted in 2000.

Crafted with approximately 1/2 ounce of precious metal, the coin is struck from 0.2509 Troy oz. 9995 fine platinum and 0.2509 Troy oz.

The perfectly graded 26.92 mm diameter coin is a product of the West Point Mint. The ten dollar denomination coin is legal tender of the United States.

The coin is one of merely 7,261 minted. Obverse: On the obverse, a platinum inset features the hand of Minerva (Roman goddess of wisdom) grasping the torch of learning beside the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST, " with the Library of Congress Jefferson Building dome in the background. The gold outer ring is inscribed with "LIBERTY, " "2000" and LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. The design is an example of the work of sculptor John Mercanti, the currently retired 12th U.

Reverse: The platinum center on the reverse depicts a stylized heraldic eagle, which is the official seal of the Library of Congress. The emblem is surrounded by branches of laurel, the "W" Mint mark, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. " The encircling gold border contains the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TEN DOLLARS.
