In 2022, The National Park Foundation (NPF), in collaboration with the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park and John Mercanti brought the Saint Gaudens Half Eagle design back to life! In numismatic history very few medallic artists and sculptor-engravers have had as much impact on the field as John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Mercanti's career began as a sculptor-engraver in 1974 and spanned 36 years until his retirement in 2010.

During his time at the U. Mint Mercanti is credited with designing over 100 U. Coins and medals, more than anyone in U. With access to the original plasters Mercanti recreated Saint Gaudens classic design!! The obverse depicts Lady Liberty encircled by a ring of stars, holding a torch and an olive branch.

The sun and its rays rising behind her while the Capitol building sits off in the distance. Also on the obverse are the inscriptions, "LIBERTY" and "MMXXII". On the reverse an eagle is in flight.

While Mercanti was one of the first artists to design coins using digital means, he's also a classically trained sculptor and engraver who prefers to sculpt his designs in clay using his own two hands. Each ray of the sun, each feather on the eagles' wings and each wrinkle in Lady Liberty's dress along with the rest of the design were all carefully sculpted by Mercanti demonstrating that human skill is the match of any computerized program!
