General Douglas MacArthur graduated from West Point in 1903. He went on to serve 52 years in the United States Army as a distinguished soldier and strategist, eventually earning the position of Chief of the Army General Staff.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his defense of the Philippines. Later, forces under his command defeated those of the Empire of Japan, after which General MacArthur directed the highly successful reconstruction of the Japanese nation. General MacArthur served as the first commander of the United Nations Forces during the Korean War.
