History: From 1980 until 1984 the U. Mint produced the American Arts Commemorative Medallions to compete with other gold bullion coins around the world.

These were the first gold coins minted by the US since 1933 when FDR took the dollar off the gold standard and banned ownership of gold. The medallions portray notable American artists such as John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, and Grant Wood. Due to poor marketing and unpopular demand, the U. Treasury failed to sell the series and production came to a halt in 1984, thus making this series very scarce.
